Heartbreak is a universal experience. It occurs for lots of reasons, but always involves a loss: relationship break-up, death, divorce, bankruptcy, health-related issues, illness, aging, cessation of smoking, vaping, or alcoholism, all the transition points in life.

Even positive things like moving from one home or city or school to another involve loss. When you lose something, it creates a void, a space that formerly held other things: time, activities, listening, talking, seeing certain things and people, a certain routine.

What you do with that space is critical to your ability to see everything gained in the time before the loss as a win, and then take that win with you into the empty space, seeing that space and new openness as fertile ground for growth.

Each experience, each relationship teaches us uncountable things, and we have to be grateful for those opportunities to learn because it allows us to know more as we move forward.

Since each kind of loss ushers in different experiences, there are some things that can be addressed as one and others that require individualization. For example, a break-up, a divorce and the death of a spouse are all difficult losses, and some parts are similar; others deserve more specific measures.
